The wheel of time: Jazan's colorful ceramics are a reflection of history



RIYADH: Pottery is not only a craft but also one of the oldest heritage crafts that represent the cultural identity of the Jazan region of Saudi Arabia. Its artistic heritage reflects the community's commitment to upholding their forefathers' customs.

The people of Jazan developed the ability to turn clay into long-lasting and useful implements and tools over time. The depth of Jazan's past and the beauty of its natural surroundings are reflected in these handcrafted objects, which are a historic art form that fortifies the bond between the people and the land.

Potters in Jazan have perfected the craft, shaping "valley clay," which is clay taken from arid valleys. According to a recent Saudi Press Agency story, the clay is meticulously gathered, cleaned, and kneaded to make it pliable and moldable.

Clay objects are molded using basic tools and then allowed to dry for a few days in the sun. After that, the plates are heated to high temperatures in conventional kilns to solidify and make them resistant to daily use and high temperatures.

Cooking pots, cups, and utensils that are still precious and used to prepare and serve traditional meals are among the items made.


Cooking in clay pots evokes the coziness of the past and is a part of the area's heritage. Madhbi and mandi are among the foods that are enhanced by the gradual and uniform distribution of heat.

Clay pots for cooking and serving meals are still very common in Jazan and beyond, even with the rise of contemporary home appliances.

Although pottery is valued as a component of Jazan's legacy, the SPA report pointed out that it faces a number of difficulties, such as a shortage of young Saudi artisans and natural clay resources.

Because of this, local authorities have been forced to step up their efforts to promote pottery, including by setting up training programs that give young people the skills they need to continue this tradition into the future.

According to SPA, local festivals are also being held to educate tourists about the significance of pottery in the region's legacy and its place in Saudi culture.

Thanks to the efforts of craftspeople and enthusiasts, pottery in Jazan has become an enduring symbol of authenticity and community. It is an important part of the area's cultural character and blends the love of the land and the natural world of the residents.
